Speaking of baskets.. religious people are like travelers in a hot-air balloon. When you look outside, the views are spectacular and endless. When you touch down and explore, the possibilities are endless. And yet, you choose float aimlessly and sit down on the floor inside the basket, hidden from all the glory, supported by a load of hot air.
I just made that up while taking a shyt lol

Hahaha I knew religious folk would be CHOMPING AT THE BIT to jump in here and shyt on atheists when it was most likely a racially motivated crime.
Oh look he killed people, let's blame him for not believing in a higher god!
I bet the same posters would be a little different if that was a christian or muslim.

and you would be doing the same thing you're accusing people of doing

blaming all muslims/Christians for the act of one lunatic

Atheists do things because of varying reasons. hatred, racism, mental disorders, sadistic tendencies.. etc.
Religious people, on the other hand, do it in the name of an imaginary character.
I'm personally not foolish enough to generalize a whole sect based on the actions of a few.
My closest friends are devout Christians and Muslims, and we get along fine. I know what real religious people are like. They're not extremist retards that twist their religion's teachings to suit their needs, to a certain extent.

If the murderer had been a member of the Tea Party he definitely would have been labeled a terrorist by the media and the White House.

The concept of religion in itself is pure, and brings positive messages, but is unfortunately shackled to teachings that often directly contradict common sense, logic and reason. It divides and teaches people to judge, based on some sort of moral superiority.

Is it too much to ask, to live selflessly and do good without explicit instructions from a book, supposedly written by a higher being?

Atheists don't have holy texts or a list of commandments but there's no doubt that there is an observed strain of atheism, typically referred to as "New Atheism", that is characterized by its followers adhering to a unique set of common beliefs that are separate from any shared disbeliefs/lack of beliefs about God. Specifically, these New Atheists have demonstrated a tendency to spout (among other harmful, fanatic dogma) bigoted, Islamaphobic rhetoric under a banner of "rational atheism".

That said, I think it's correct to hold the attacker solely responsible for these murders, and not those who happen to share his beliefs.

As to the question of whether or not these attacks were motivated by hate, the father of one of the victims appears to believe so: http://www.newsobserver.com/2015/02/11/4547742_chapel-hill-police-arrest-man.html?rh=1
