U.S. warns travelers about chikungunya virus, spread by mosquito bites, in China​


The United States is warning people traveling to China about chikungunya, a virus that spreads to humans through mosquito bites.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a Level 2 travel notice for people traveling to the country, urging them to "practice enhanced precautions."

The notice, issued last week, says the chikungunya outbreak is in Guangdong Province, with most cases reported in the city of Foshan. In recent weeks, the region near Hong Kong has reported more than 7,000 cases.

"You can protect yourself by preventing mosquito bites, which includes using insect repellent; wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants; and staying in places with air conditioning or that have screens on the windows and doors," the CDC says.

The chikungunya virus was first identified in Africa in the early 1950s, and the CDC has issued travel notices about it for multiple countries — currently including Bolivia, Kenya, Madagascar and Sri Lanka

Symptoms
Symptoms develop 3 to 7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. The disease is easily spread. Most people who become infected have symptoms.

The most common symptoms are fever and joint pain. Other symptoms include:

Headache
Joint swelling
Muscle pain
Nausea
Rash
Symptoms are similar to the flu and can be severe, but usually not deadly. Most people recover in a week. Some have joint pain for months or longer. The disease can lead to death in older adults.

Treatment
There is no treatment for chikungunya. Like the flu virus, it has to run its course. You can take steps to help relieve symptoms:

Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
Get plenty of rest.
Take ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn), or acetaminophen (Tylenol) to relieve pain and fever.

Cacs vs African Mosquitoes is an underrated long term beef. They fear for their lack of immunity and resistance to African viruses and diseases that the average local can shake off
