@AlecStapp
So we are on the verge of trading the most powerful technology ever invented by humans in exchange for… beans.

[Quoted tweet]
Bloomberg reports that NVIDIA Blackwell AI chips will be on the negotiating table this Thursday in US-China trade talks.

Any substantial deal here would likely reshape the AI compute balance of power: ifp.org/the-b30a-decision/

Many people are saying that "Blackwells for beans" would be a historically bad deal

@AlecStapp
Lmao Grok in the replies

4/36
@MFRE_Shenanigan
They can buy plenty to reverse engineer so might as well sell it to them and keep them dependent on a US company than push them to catch up faster

5/36
@AlecStapp
they've been smuggling in some chips for years, but haven't made much progress yet.

it is orders of magnitude more difficult to reverse engineer these chips than you make it sound.

6/36
@GabeMenchaca
In a sense aren’t beans also a very valuable technology? Good source of protein, cheap to grow, easy to trade, fix nitrogen, etc.

7/36
@AlecStapp
Gabe!

8/36
@HotPanini1
I don't see you eating the semiconductors now, do I?

9/36
@AlecStapp

10/36
@tomhfh
magic beans?

11/36
@AlecStapp
Normal beans for magic sand!

12/36
@labs_yy
Tech is like ice cream, sell it now before it melts and become worthless.

13/36
@AlecStapp
An impressively incorrect analogy

14/36
@bradstradamus
i honestly don't understand the nature of this fake soybean crisis. beans are fungible and global supply is up single digits YoY. you'd look at the chinese purchasing graphs and think prices have collapsed... but they've just returned to pre-covid levels

15/36
@hazterisk
Worst version of Jack and the Beanstalk ever.

16/36
@LibertyRPF
It's not about soybeans, it's about rural votes, which is probably worse

17/36
@JonNiconchuk
It’s finally come to life

18/36
@Mitch_Sweigart
We are literally growing too much food and no one says, “maybe we should grow less food.”

Somehow it’s a political third rail to let the agriculture economy/<1% of people who are farmers experience a reset.

19/36
@Willenation
What if Jack had listened to the haters? Think how far behind we’d be in giant stalk technology

20/36
@christianbrits
Ok but are they magic beans?

21/36
@Ross_Hunt
Life imitates Jack and the Beanstalk.

But remember—in the end, Jack is the one who gets the golden goose/ AGI/ Fusion reactor

22/36
@tomlbutler
No, it would most likely be to get Chinese rare earths.

But either way, it would be insane.

23/36
@jeremiahscholl
Blackwells and beans for cheap electric cars and solar panels would be a sweet deal though!

24/36
@tanvi_ratna
Well the US-India relationship, which could be the pivotal security cornerstone of this period, was derailed for beans too

[Quoted tweet]
Trump’s 25% tariff on India exposes the Mar-a-Lago logic: U.S. market and military leverage traded for strategic alignment.

India’s ambiguity on Russia frustrates Trump. The BRICS won’t fold.

And the economic flashpoint with India isn’t oil or the dollar. It's beans. 🧵

GxLQY0dW4AE6TV3.jpg

25/36
@marrtw
Not really. China will steal or lease the compute anyway. Or develop "good enough" capacity. We don't have the power to stop them without a complete decoupling...which, isn't going to happen (nor should it). We're not at war with China...Thucydides Trap must be avoided.

26/36
@wantthepfunk
This trade will be worse then the time we did the WNBA player for the international gun runner.

27/36
@rlanham1963
@grok Who seems to be winning the current US-China trade negotiation. Do you think the US is handing China good access to AI-related technologies?

28/36
@thesash
it’s actually chips and beans for money hope that helps

29/36
@daprofile
Magic beans.

30/36
@AmericaRus2024
Art of the fawking deal, my guy.

31/36
@jaedme
I mean, food sits at the bottom of the stack if you think about it

32/36
@towerofshadow
even if agi is invented, itll be in our best interest to be friendly with other countries.

33/36
@ScottColeman_9
We better get back one helluva beanstalk in return.

34/36
@ad1220
Not only beans, but they were already buying beans prior to the war! So China is going to end up doing the same thing they were doing before, only now they get our tech.
Art of the deal!

35/36
@TheGhostOfKyivv
The US will be selling the finished product, not the technology. China is already trying to reverse engineer it anyway.

36/36
@j_pimen
Maybe they are magic beans. In that case it would be a great trade. 🙄

China can build the energy to power AI data centers far faster than the US. We should not be giving them the chips to erode America's AI advantage.

China still got what they wanted, so how is this a win?
What is this going to do for the people genuinely asking?
What are you talking about? This is more about Trump backing down. Because he was never going to keep these tariffs on forever. So where all the Doomsday Sayers now?
Nah Mr 4d chess said he was going to win like never before :mjlol:
They lost to China decades ago and everything being done now is just to save face. But they have no choice but to eventually bow down but claim it as a win. The US doesn't make shyt and wouldn't know how even if they could.
Business people do not believe in "made in america"

Look at shark tank. First thing they will complain about is "why dont you go overseas and find a manufacturer?!" :mjlol:

We know how to make war, so the military industrial complex gon keep chugging right along

This the level of negotiations that Trump is doing in China around TikTok and soybeans.

@ChrisPainterYup
Striking graph from the new @IFP report on Blackwell sales to China.

It really is amazing how dominant the US position on AI chips is right now. Our advantages over China, including (sadly) in tech, just feel so few and far between these days, but this one is really striking.

I'd be curious to see a graph like this weighted by "model quality". Maybe such a thing exists.

@fiiiiiist
The China-specific AI chip that's reportedly on the table is being marketed as "50% worse" than our best AI chips.

In reality, pound-for-pound, it's our best AI chip.

How does processing power per Watt compare?

3/9
@fiiiiiist
Specs on power consumption haven't been reported, but our best guess based on the analogous H20-H100 comparison is that at a cluster level B30A looks ~20% more performant per watt.

It's almost as bad for the software coding industry as it was with US manufacturing. Every company buys off the shelf software riddled with security holes. That has been farmed out to India and coded with people with barely any experience. To now companies are gonna have their non-technical Manager or CEO vibe code applications. What could possibly go wrong?

Hackers in China and Russia are gonna have a field day with this vibe coding stuff.

@Kanthan2030
In China’s new Five-Year Plan, the #1 priority is “modernized industrial system” — i.e., manufacturing.

By 2030, China will even be a bigger superpower in producing goods for the world.

The US + Europe have no viable plans other than delusional trade wars they cannot win. 🤡

And we are enforcing the green deal even further in the EU.

Germany needs a common sense revolution, not green revolution.

@MSJedits
Exactly. While the West plays with tariffs, China is building the future's supply chain. You can't sanction your way out of dependency.

If only American leaders understood that money doesn't have any value without work. Maybe then, they'd get a clue.

European countries can't make five-year plans because their governments change as often as the weather.

Europes plan is to fake it till you make it... which will only take a few eternities 😂

SL, can’t help stupid. For some time, folk have tried to explain to the Colonialists that trade wars aren’t good for anyone, particularly them. But at some point, reality just has to be allowed to do its thing.

What reactions will the west have do you think? and how do your indian compatriots like the five-year or a decade-plan?

How do you intend to manufacture for the world when you constantly threaten your customers?

Manufacturing is of little use. If no one is buying what you make.

As a China expert, are you familiar with the two men pictured?

Ten years ago, they led their respective debate teams in a historic debate on China's future.

That "future" may be now.

Many Chinese have fallen out with their friends because of their debates.

:mjlol:

Its almost like they are doing this by design....

The have proof already that these companies are popping shyt about AI but in reality they are just farming shyt out to India :dead:

I still dont know what the fukk vibe coding means

LOL, that’s a little less than the 2 million tons that they normally purchase every month.

Well remember they fukked over the farmers here so they could let Argentina sell soybeans to China instead

When the stateside farms fail, they'll go buy up their land for cheap on Acre Trader

I think it's just prompting LLM's to produce code and running the code with little to no edits. In my case running code I don't understand but it works. :manny:
