Police shot a man outside New York City's Penn Station after he attacked officers with a weapon resembling a meat cleaver, according to multiple local media reports.
The attack occurred Thursday during Manhattan's chaotic rush hour in a bustling area near Madison Square Garden, The New York Post reports.
One officer was struck in the head with the weapon and another was grazed by friendly fire, ABC News reported citing a police source. Their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
"Apparently the suspect assaulted one of the officers with some sort of sharp object, likely a meat cleaver, and shots were fired," NYPD spokeswoman Sophia Mason told Reuters. Mason could not confirm how the second officer was injured.
Police hit the suspect multiple times and he is in critical condition, The Post reported.
One witness said in a tweet that he heard about six gunshots.
The incident started after the suspect became upset about a boot that had been placed on his car, The Post reported. When the man refused to drop his weapon, an officer tasered him and a struggle ensued.
