“If you are not a liberal at 25, you have no heart. If you are not a conservative at 35 you have no brain.” So said Winston Churchill. Or US president John Adams. Or perhaps King Oscar II of Sweden. Variations of this aphorism have circulated since the 18th century, underscoring the well-established rule that as people grow older, they tend to become more conservative. The pattern has held remarkably firm.

By my calculations, members of Britain’s “silent generation”, born between 1928 and 1945, were five percentage points less conservative than the national average at age 35, but around five points more conservative by age 70. The “baby boomer” generation traced the same path, and “Gen X”, born between 1965 and 1980, are now following suit. Millennials — born between 1981 and 1996 — started out on the same trajectory, but then something changed. The shift has striking implications for the UK’s Conservatives and US Republicans, who can no longer simply rely on their base being replenished as the years pass.

This is borne out by US survey data showing that, having reached political maturity in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, millennials are tacking much further to the left on economics than previous generations did, favouring greater redistribution from rich to poor.

I remember seeing people post that old more conservative as you get older quote on here a few months ago, but turns out that for the first time in history its just not true

These right wing fukks days are numbered :manny: time to stop trying to win twitter clapbacks and actually serve your constituents instead of lining your pockets

It makes perfect sense. Conservatives platforms have primarily been based on things like family values, financial independence, ect. As a person gets older and experienced these things for themselves, they are more likely to support those ideas in government

But in this case, the conservative platform is what is changing, not the generations perceptions of life. People still lean into those topics as they get older, but when it’s accompanied by “oh yeah, and we hate all the blacks and Mexicans” people can’t rock with that having grown up in a modern integrated society. They’ve gone absolutely off the rails in their beliefs and representation in an attempt to appeal to geriatrics with dementia.

Millenials are taking longer to purchase their first home, have their first kid, and to get settled in their careers. I bet that is a major driver.

I can clearly remember conservatives in the year 2000 being very different than the conservatives today. The party and its image has changed. It was okay to be a black republican pre Obama. You would just get jokes but no one would attack you.
more than ever before black republicans openly cape for white-supremacy and denigrate black folks.

The funny thing is, the popular black conservatives all bash black people. So even though they think they’re being one of the good ones, they are still being judged, and being the face of all black conservatives. So when a black person claims to be a Republican, they’re going to be branded as a race traitor, not just because they vote red, but because of those popular black conservatives. Since the party went from “take the welfare away, and force them to work” to “white people are the real victims of racism, and we need to end affirmative action”, the racism is more open. Trump made people feel comfortable saying things they said behind closed doors. Add in social media, which exposed a lot of people, and ended a lot of friendships.

Nobody was shunning Colin Powell, or Condeleeza Rice. When you start publicly putting your own people down, that’s when you get attacked. There are a lot of black 2A supporters who vote red as single issue voters. And I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of 6 figure earning black voters vote red, because they feel it’s more beneficial financially. Not every black person cares about racism.

Which is wild because WHITE WOMEN benefited the most from affirmative action.

We also realize that the ideals of family values and financial independence they present are complete and actual bullshyt. All of these ponchy, "alpha males" touting good Christian family values are a collective lot of mayo dandies with horrible souls who have no problem bankrupting the country as long as they control how and in which ways it's picked clean
