Breaking News: ATL airport almost got hit with a mass shooting

“We do begin tonight with the breaking news out of the busiest airport here in the U.S., Hartsfield-Jackson airport in Atlanta,” he said. “Tonight, authorities say they moved in quickly to avert what could have been a horrific mass shooting.”

Kicking off his Oct. 20 broadcast, the 51-year-old anchor revealed that the news had just broken regarding an arrest at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, with authorities thwarting a man who was planning to conduct a mass shooting.

“We do begin tonight with the breaking news out of the busiest airport here in the U.S., Hartsfield-Jackson airport in Atlanta,” he said. “Tonight, authorities say they moved in quickly to avert what could have been a horrific mass shooting.”

He then showed surveillance video of the suspect waling around the airport, noting that police believed he was monitoring the busy lines at the TSA checkpoint as the airport, before showing him being taken down by officers.

He then revealed more details about what authorities believe was planned.

“Authorities say just outside the airport, they recovered an AR-15 assault style rifle and 27 rounds of ammunition in his truck. Police believe he was scoping out the airport before going back out to his truck, where he had that weapon and ammunition,” he said.

He then had reporter Faith Abubey come on the reveal additional details from the scene in Atlanta. In her report, she identified the suspect as 49-year-old Billy Cagle, before sharing additional footage from outside the airport.

“Police say this surveillance video shows Cagle parking that truck outside the packed terminal today, around 9:30 a.m.,” she reported.

Abubey added that he was taken down after police received a tip from his hometown, more than an hour away from the airport. Authorities revealed that family members called in with their concerns after Cagle allegedly live streamed on social media sharing he was going to attack the location.

Abubey then added, "And David, authorities flagging that family for flagging those, basically what was, or could have been, a really difficult situation. In the meantime, authorities are saying that suspect is a convicted felon with mental health issues, and tonight, he is behind bars on multiple charges.”
