I known this dude for a long time and he's a good dude. His son got a partial scholarship for school and also finacial aid. But obviously it's not enough. So he called me last night and asked would I take out a small loan so his son could stay in school. I of course told him no.

My thing is this. If you can't afford to keep a kid in school make him come home. His mother insisted that he had to go away to school. And now, they're in so much debt that its caused friction in their marriage. His missed paying the rent last month so they had to find somewhere else to live. So she basically kicked him out. Again, I don't get the mentality that one has to go away for school in order to grow up. Especially if you can't afford it.

Go to schools you can afford period--or plan accordingly. My family helped me with my loans and it was their decision to do so...he and his wife should have had a more realistic conversation about what they could afford with their child. Send him to a 2 year institution and then onward for a 4 year if necessary, whatever it takes.

People are still believing that the college 'experience' is necessary. People are institutionalized.
What is this kid doing that you, a family friend, should even be brought into the equation, though? Is it even a good degree?

When I was college age I wanted to go to Morehouse. That is private tuition of around $20,000/year (at the time, more now I think) :skip:

My folks wasn't havin that shyt. Told me to go to a nice in-state school and thank God I did. I left debt-free and had a great college experience nonetheless.

Dude needs to be in community college.

tell him that you will give him a G and he won't even have to pay you back if his son transfers to a local school.

then help him out.
