In 2019, Harris County deputies in Texas seized $41,680 in cash from Ameal Woods, a Black business owner, while he was traveling to purchase a new tractor-trailer. Despite no drug charges being filed, the funds were retained through Texas’s civil forfeiture system, which allows law enforcement and prosecutorial offices to profit from seized assets. A jury initially upheld the seizure in 2023, but in October 2025, a Texas appeals court reversed the decision, finding the seizure unconstitutional and ordering the money to be returned to Woods.
