Sometimes it's out of pity and sometimes you're not lying to them especially if they have a pretty face/nice personality. Like I have one friend who's on the heavier side and she likes pretty/muscular guys, I tell her men are visual so she needs to lose weight to be healthier and to open up her dating options.
