Lot of good info in here - something else that can help with very little legwork is in getting negative information removed. Most of the time this involves simply sending form/template letters (you may be able to find online) to various credit agencies and creditors. A lot of the time the creditors will simply not respond due to the paperwork involved. If they don't respond, then the credit agencies have to remove the entry from your credit report. I know that there are companies that will do this for you - you may want to look into it, especially if you anticipate requiring a substantial loan (home purchase for instance) in the future.

Pay your bills consistently (very important)
Don't have more than three credit cards that you use. (Keep it at two)
Don't apply for credit cards you don't need even if it is tempting.

False. My Credit Card setup:
Discover It (5% rotating categories)
Chase Freedom (5% rotating categories)

American Express Blue Cash Preferred (6% cash back at groceries stores)
US Bank Cash+ (Selectable categories I use this card for 5% cash back at Best Buy)
Chase Amazon Prime Visa (Amazon 5% cash back)
Target Mastercard (5% off instantly at Target)

Chase Freedom Unlimited (1.5% cash back I use this once a year it's an old account twice converted)
Citi Double Cash (2% cash back on everything my go to card when nothing gets a better rate)

That's 8 primary credit cards of which I use 6-7 pretty regularly. You can't maximize your cash back with 3 or less credit cards. 3 if you had the Amex I have, the Citi DC and maybe the Freedom or It would be acceptable but I'd still feel like I'm missing out.

Do you get points by using these cards?

I am only familiar with the American Express Blue which gives me some shytty points

I understand what you are saying but I was speaking to OP. Sticking to 3 or less cards so you can manage payments on time, wouldn't skip payments etc at least for a year. Having too many credit cards might be overwhelming to someone new to the game.
