First nikka I heard screamed to the top of his lungs “ HEEEE SHEEEE “. Should be performing at every LBGQT event.
I get his 90s hits. And commercial appeal.
But is his work in the 80s considered top tier and classic?
To me in the 80s he sounded very hardcore. Not commercial at all. But not too grimy.
Powerful. Like a bad guy version of Run DMC but he was still a good person....kinda (fukked a pregnant chick right b4 he hit the stage once)
But his voice sounds smooth and grimy at the same time in the 80s.
I saw him JUNE 29,1986 on his 1st major tour which was opening for RUN DMC on their raising hell tour when it hit Rochester NY.What year did you see him live?
I respect that so much!
He was still a face in the 90’s, but moreso due to being a vet and crossover status. He wasn’t #1 but he was still A-list.Understood but he was largely the face of mainstream Hip Hop in the 80s.

First off yes his work in the 80s is considered top tier and classic,Radio and Im Bad are certifed iconic albums
Secondly he WAS commercial too from the jump and had that balance. He dropped I Need Love
Was he considered top tier and classic
He had 3 platinum albums in the 80's breh. He was literally the first solo rapper to go Platinum ever. First solo rapper to release a full length LP ever.
Him and Run DMC redefined the sound of hip hop with their first albums. Then LL came completely out of left field with "I Need Love" creating a whole new style of song with hip hop ballads.
LL's longevity and ability to stay current and still somehow seem young over 3+ decades is phenomenal.
I saw him JUNE 29,1986 on his 1st major tour which was opening for RUN DMC on their raising hell tour when it hit Rochester NY.
Lineup went in this order:
RUN DMC
WHODINI
LL COOL J (RADIO ALBUM HAD JUST DROPPED A YEAR BEFORE)
BEASTIE BOYS (who only had a single out at the time and they only did 2 songs and we're off in 10 minutes)
LL was supposed to come here 6 months before that and headline a small venue with MC Shan opening but he didn't show.
During his set someone shot a bottle onstage and busted him in the head...he stopped the show security yanked the dude that did it from the crowd, took him backstage to be never seen again lol and LL finished his set.
Great show and tour,good times!
with NO radio playDropping 3 platinum albums in the eighties as a rapper![]()
