Dr J Effect.. his MVP years were before the game exploded on a mainstream level, and even though his stardom extended into that post explosion era he was outshined by the acts that ultimately now define it

What gets me is why sometimes he isn’t looked at a CLEARLY above late 80s types like Kane and Rakim that didn’t have a fraction of his run

Because Kane and especialy Rakim were lookedat as pushing ra forward. LL could hang but he wasn't fully updated yet. He caught up around Mr. Smith.

True. What are these high quality songs ive never heard from L? 30 years later and u hear Dear Mama,Hail Mary, and Brenda's got a baby on a fairly regular basis. The only L song I hear is Doing it.

Its Because LL came out in the 80s, he's part of that era, he just happened to keep it going into the 90s and beyond.

That said LL IS one of the GOATs and even made up the phrase.

But also, LL's long term catalogue is kind of sketchy and top heavy. I always say if you take his best 10 songs and compare them against any other emcee, his songs will equal or surpass any emcee, but if you take his top 100 songs and compare them against other emcees... he's gonna lost to everyone in the top 200 lmao.
