So Ive been looking at dual sport bikes. To be absolutely honest Im only getting a bike to ride to and from work and that's it. My new job is a 30 mile drive each way so I need something that good on gas. Is a cruiser the way to go if I want good gas mileage? I give two shyts about speed, power, torque and all that. I just want something that has great gas mileage.

I'd be looking at Honda's, Suzuki's, and KTM's........for dual-sports, seat height can be an issue if you are short (they can be lowered though). A cruiser would be nice, they are comfortable and get good gas mileage. Have you ridden before?

I work at a Honda dealer, I can give you pretty much any info about anything they offer. I will say between dual-sports and cruisers, their is going to be comfort difference esp. for 30min ride to and from work. In the Honda lineup I would steer you to a Honda Shadow 750, either the Spirit, Aero, or Phantom, they are all close to the same platform, 750cc fuel-injected engine, around $7,500. If you are doing freeway riding I would suggest a windshield, cuts down on the wind beating you up and anything else that might fly your way (weather-wise). Dual-sport, Honda offer 2 models, CRF250L and XR650L, the 650 is tall as fukk, I'm 5'8" and tippy-toed on that thing.

The used market you can find some deals as well. If you want bigger than a 750, most companies make or have made an 1100cc cruiser.

The Phantom is a very good bike, smooth ride, good power, and great styling with a nice layout. The flat paint along with black trim pieces has made it very popular. Not much I would change on it except the exhaust and a add removable windshield. Compared to the Harley it's roughly $1,000 less, has a smoother motor (less vibration), shaft drive (very low maintenance), and lower center of gravity. The Harley sits up a bit higher than the Shadow, at times can feel top-heavy, the seat is also smaller than whats on the Shadow, there is more vibration in the bike, and you have belt final drive. If you plan on customizing, the Harley has way more options than the Shadow, plus the ability to upgrade to a 1200cc kit.

That top one is more my style

Can't go wrong with a KTM, all they make is off-road and atv's, top notch quality stuff. Whatever you buy I would check and see where the dealers are located incase you need parts and/or accessories.

30 miles? I have a 65 mile drive. Cost-wise, it will be cheaper to drive your car unless it is a gas guzzler. Even then, it will take a while to even out, because of motorcycle insurance, helmet and gear (I highly recommend always wearing boots, riding jacket, gloves, riding pants and helmet) and motorcycle. Really, if you want to save a lot from the gitgo, get a 250 cc engine cruiser. That will be the cheapest on gas and give you enough HP for highway speed. In reality, a 500cc and larger will get you off the line faster, but you're not really racing so what's the point? The Suzuki TU250 and GW250 are worth looking into.
