Russell is averaging 5.3 "potential assists" per game, which is when a player shoots a shot that would generate an assist if the shot went in. The average percentage of made shots in these scenarios is around 60% or so. Russell's only averaging 1.7apg, so for him it's around 30%. For most players 5.3 potential assists would translate to around 3.2 actual assists. Considering his minutes and role (just 43.3 touches per game), that's solid.

Player A makes a great pass to a wide open cutter who blows the layup

Player B, with 2 seconds on the shot clock, passes to a teammate 20 feet from the hoop who banks in a desperation heave

Who was more deserving of an assist?

That's the point of this stat. It's an attempt to make the assist a more truly individual statistic.

Don't matter player don't make the basket they don't get assist. Would make more sense to give a player an assist if their pass leads to a foul and player hits both ft
