4 mics - maybe 4.5. The Book of Life that came with the album was my first introduction to all that classic Eric B & Rakim material - and overshadowed the 18th Letter for me.
Ra was flowing on this album - but some of the beats was :scusthov:
The Primo joints was :banderas:

Some real knockout joints, and its a very good album. I agree with the thread....'when Im flowing' is just a breathtaking. This was around the time that Preem started establishing himself as God in the flesh. He would just wake up outta bed and make a classic beat to throw to somebody, and he laced the 18th letter something vicious.

But Rakim's drawbacks as an MC limit the album. The 18th letter never coheres into something special, because Rakim for all his gifts is monotonous and one track minded. Hes just a helluva MC thats going to tell you how dope he is on the mic, and thats pretty much it. To that, the 18th letter is just a nice collection of tracks, but not a complete piece of work that takes you on a journey.

great album. it was nice to hear rakim murder the "newer" production. "remember that" is one of my favorite tracks off the release.
