direct democracy has always been a bad idea. representative democracy like we have isn't great, but better. and i've always felt that way. having lived in california while in college i saw all the ballot initiatives that people were out canvassing for and eventually got on the ballot. all these "great" spending initiatives but never a counter initiative to pay for it.

anyway back to laughing at the brits (or what will be left of it).

It can't. Pandora's box has been opened and you can't close it back up.

The Germans must be pumped. They now have precedent to stop supporting all the shytty fukking economies in Europe.
The Germans don't want to go back to their own currency.

They're also tired of propping up Greece, Spain, and all the other failing states. There's a breaking point and I think Europe is fast approaching it. If France or another big economy exits and Germany is left to support the whole of EU, I think that will be the breaking point.

EU must now stop further unraveling _ if it can

Only way they can stop this snowball effect is by blocking any further referendums...

If the people get to vote, they will vote leave...You had two referendums so far in Greece and the UK...The people in both situations voted leave...In the Greeks case their corrupt leftist p*ssy government defied the will of the people which is the only reason they're still in the EU...

That and their country would turn into a third world state overnight...

So if they want to sign a trade deal with the EU they will be making some of the other concessions that Norway/Switzerland made which are similar to what they already have. I think countries like Greece,Ireland,Spain and Portugal would have been fukked if they did not have the EU as a backstop during their crisis. Populist sentiment would obviously downplay that effect but they would get that 3rd world treatment by the IMF if that was their only option.

They HAD to defy their people in order to keep some of their country to themselves. If they left, Germany and whoever else would call in their loans and start taking hard assets in Greece as collateral. The EU owns Greece right now so theres no real freedom for the Greeks.

Direct Democracy is terrible

It opens the door to demagogues and fringe groups.

This also showed why referendums are not such a good idea..they are prone to emotion, protest votes and self-delusion. The long term results may be positive but clearly a lot of people did not appreciate the fallout and just wanted to ''stick it to the elites''.

There is no doubt about this....
