They HAD to defy their people in order to keep some of their country to themselves. If they left, Germany and whoever else would call in their loans and start taking hard assets in Greece as collateral. The EU owns Greece right now so theres no real freedom for the Greeks.
They were a sovereign nation with a military...Ain't no bytchass banker taking any assets from them...

In order to stay in the EU they sold their sovereignty to Germany and the bankers...They didn't win anything here, they didnt keep anything, they sold their worth for a loan that went right back to the banks it came from...

They would have been far better off in the LONG RUN keeping their assets and defaulting like Argentina did...Going back to drachma would have been a far better strategy than debt slavery with no end in sight...

Referendums could adopt a higher threshold. I know that in some Westminister systems a 2/3 majority is required for some big changes.
and since this affects 4 countries and not just one ... Nicola Sturgeon asked the PM to have a 4 country lock on the result, that if all 4 countries didn't vote the same way the UK wouldn't leave and he wasn't down.

it's like cameron didn't know how to control a damn referendum. no wonder he'll go down in history.

Yeah looked up the pop of the UK. 50 mill are voting age and if I read right, they needed 16 million votes at least for it to pass. That's only 32% participation required. Seems kind of low.

Here's the thing....
By and large politics the world over are corrupt beyond measure, the system that allows them to exist are a tangled web of bureaucracy, couple that with indifference of the people, who ultimately allow things to exist the way they are, and you end up with what is goign on in the EU and in the USA.

People are just now starting to realize that SOMETHING is wrong. The powers that be have positioned themselves to say, "oh THIS is what's wrong", and that "THIS" be it immigrants, terrorist, black people, white people, guns, Islam, etc, is nothing more than the a smoke screen. We are witnessing one of two things.
A. A reawakening of the political mind.
B. The final death rattles of a system infected with corruption.

A petition calling for Sadiq Khan to declare London an independent state after the UK voted to quit the EU has been signed by thousands of people.

The petition's organiser James O'Malley, said the capital was "a world city" which should "remain at the heart of Europe".

Nearly 60% of people in the capital backed the Remain campaign, in stark contrast to most of the country.

The LSE's director said the vote showed how "radically different" London is.

Prof Tony Travers said London's economy and politics "look so different" to the rest of the country and it was up to the mayor to decide whether to argue for more power.

"Maybe moving more decision making to cities and councils could be a solution to the differences within the country," he said.

Following the result, Sadiq Khan said it was "crucial that London has a voice at the table during those renegotiations" with the EU.

"We will continue to look outwards and trade and engage with the entire world, including the European Union," he said.

The petition, which suggests the mayor could become "President Sadiq", has already been signed by more than 27,000 people.

Mr O'Malley said he was a "big EU fan" and was "fed up watching the results" when he set up the page on change.org.

He said he was "astonished" the petition had taken off but suggested it showed he had "clearly touched a nerve" with others who "like me want to live in an international city".

"Even though I voted to leave, this morning I woke up and I just — the reality did actually hit me," one woman told the news channel ITV News. "If I'd had the opportunity to vote again, it would be to stay." :mjlol: :wtf:

This is why I hate dumbed down conversations among major media news outlets.

Now do you see why America is a Republic???? Using referendum for an issue as widespread as this is moronic.

direct democracy has always been a bad idea. representative democracy like we have isn't great, but better. and i've always felt that way. having lived in california while in college i saw all the ballot initiatives that people were out canvassing for and eventually got on the ballot. all these "great" spending initiatives but never a counter initiative to pay for it.

anyway back to laughing at the brits (or what will be left of it).

Lol. You found the interview that I was talking about in the Locker Room thread. She couldn't vote because she hadn't registered on time.

this was a dumb move by the UK that seemed to be driven by anti-immigration and xenophobia, but they voted for it :yeshrug:
