In terms of actual geopolitics it's pretty irrelevant. Biden wants Griner back as a political statement. Putin wants Bout back as a political statement. The realm at which negotiations are occurring is completely separate from the realm at which international geopolitics are debated - which is how Trevor Reed just got exchanged for Konstantin Yaroshenko without the war and sanctions situation changing one iota.
