A Brooklyn dad was fatally shot for snatching back his teenage son’s stolen Oakland Raiders baseball cap, police sources said Thursday.
Gerald Cummings, 38, was fatally shot in the head in front of his 17-year-old son Gerald Sealey outside Public School 6 on Snyder Ave. in Flatbush Wednesday night after reclaiming the pricey cap a teen had stolen from his son, the sources said.
“He did what any father would do and that's stand up for his children,” said Cummings’ longtime friend Earl Saunders. “All he did was confront the kids that beat up his son — and lost his life in the process of defending his child.”
On Saturday, the son was playing basketball outside the school when the robber and two other teens approached him and swiped the Don C Oakland Raiders baseball hat off his head.
The cap goes for about $120 on eBay.
Sealey was playing basketball in the same spot when he saw the teen — wearing his cherished cap — and two other teens about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, police sources said
Sealey called his father, who ran over to the court — and snatched the cap off the 16-year-old robber’s head.
The crook followed Cummings and his son out of the court trying to get the hat back when one of the robber’s pals pulled a gun from his backpack and started blasting away.
Cummings was hit in the back, back of the head, and right temple, sources said. His son was not hit.
The dad was rushed to Kings County Hospital but could not be saved.
Cummings had nine prior arrests for crimes including burglary and marijuana possession, according to court records. But friends said he had given up crime to focus on his family.
Investigators have identified the teen robber and have a street name for the gunman but have not been able to find either suspect, police sources said.
