Panthers sign Bruce Irvin to 1-year, $4 million deal

Carolina Panthers sign defensive end Bruce Irvin to one-year, $4 million deal
The Panthers have added to their pass rush via free agency.

Update 2: The deal is for one year, $4 million (with a max value of $5 million) according to Jourdan Rodrigue.

Update 1: The team has confirmed the report and made the signing of Bruce Irvin to a one-year contract official.

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney had the following to say on the signing:

“Our primary focus coming into the offseason was to add talent to our offensive line and our front on defense, primarily in the area of rushing the passer,” . . . “Bruce has a knack for sacking and disrupting the quarterback. We are very pleased to have him as a member of the Carolina Panthers.”

The Carolina Panthers have bolstered their pass rush by signing free agent defensive end Bruce Irvin to a one-year contract according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Irvin has been in the league since he was drafted in the first round (No. 15 overall) by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2012 NFL Draft. He has also spent time with the Oakland Raiders and Atlanta Falcons. In eight games with the Falcons last year, Irvin recorded 3.5 sacks and 13 tackles.

Provided it didn’t cost too much money, this is a solid move by the Panthers to add some quality veteran depth to their defensive line. Before today, their pass rush consisted of Mario Addison, Efe Obada, Bryan Cox Jr. and Marquis Haynes. Irvin may not be as good now as he was earlier in his career, but he’s solid enough that he can be considered a quality addition in free agency for a team who has a desperate need for players who can pressure the quarterback.
