I've been trying to figure out what the strategic purpose behind that was....

the obvious example that I can think of is that he was using his right arm as a barrier...

but I got a feeling its much deeper then that....

Easy he fights like a point karate guy, not a real full contact fighter.
From the way his stance was, they way he threw his punches, and etc.
