Someone in the other thread wrote that 20 million was the most they could sell it for.

Is that true?
Why was there a cap?
Why couldn’t they sell it at the market price…whatever it might have been?

apparently the local zoning laws preventing them from the developing the land. So they weren't left with many options.

low key kind of a fukked up way to give them their land back. like here you go negroes, you get your land back but you can't do anything with it or we'll fine you, but we can buy it back from you at a steal price of 20million.

So then what happens?

The city changes the zoning laws in a few years and sells the land to some developer for 100 million dollars or something and they make a bunch of condos?

Maybe I’m being silly.

At the end of the day in a predatory capitalist system to do whatever they want... The issue is a question of collective consciousness: When we out to the streets and say 'We want you to support a Black owned business' -- Does that Black owned business have the obligation to remain a Black Owned Business? Or have they used our political capital to enrich their individual selves?

Coulda took that lease money and fought that zoning law because im almost certaint hat shyt will conveniently change to where the city can start building shyt on that land

It's a whole family. Some family members are possibly on hard times, and just need some quick cash. Would have been easier to hold on to if it was 1 descendant.

All they had to do was reach out to Don Peebles and ask that brothers advise and have him spearhead the rezoning effort.

I want to hear his perspective over anyone.

This is an L to me until proven otherwise.

My guess is they probably started laying the ground work on changing the zoning laws as soon the proposal to return the land was drawn up. Developers in the area will be itching to get their hands on that land.

Just listened to the interview, and her saying this quote. She was speaking in general, but specifically about Essence magazine. Interesting. A generation ago, the same questions were asked when the Black owned haircare lines were sold to larger companies.

*For the record, I don't think it applies to Coach Sanders. He revived a powerful sports program, and left it in a much better position then when he got there. Definitely from a financial standpoint. And the corporate partnerships with brands and sports leagues are still in existence with JSU and SWAC. If the school and sports conference doesn't continue to build off of that momentum, that's on them.

we do not know the situation of the family, if they were 6 member total...it would be unwise to sell

however the family could technically be close to a hundred, that 400K a year after all that taxes and even split might be peanuts
a 20 million would be a better option if they don't have plans to build on it

Yeah Essence was her reference point but the part of the convo + Tavis asking what the point is of all this 'black owned' talk if we're gonna take the money is exactly what I was thinking and saying on here when the Deion situation went down. Time will tell but I think that was more of a cash injection than a revival. My concern is it'll wither in his absence.
