You don't have to be completely free of injuries to get through a team physical. A team will often accept that a particular player has a certain condition that will require treatment or time for complete recovery. Now in the case of Nicks, he will probably deal with the toe problem the rest of his career, or it may end his career soon. Turf toe can be career-ending.
The staph infection, however, I understand is not directly associated with the toe injury itself. That came from a blister that became infected. It doesn't mean that Nicks picked up the staph at OBP. In fact, Nicks could have picked it up anywhere and actually brought it into OBP. Tynes could have carried it in as well, he was suffering from an infected ingrown toenail. Additionally, it could have been brought into OBP from a completely different source.
Carl Nicks can't even walk or stand right these days. If someone asked me to lay money down on Nicks playing again for the Bucs--ever--I would not be willing to make such a bet. I think there's a chance he never plays for this team (or maybe any team) ever again
