Perryville man gets 10 years for throwing boiling water on wife

ELKTON — Michael Anthony Oliver showed no remorse after throwing boiling water on his wife inside their Perryville residence last summer, leaving the woman with third-degree burns over 20 percent of her body and resulting in a painful six-and-a-half hour skin graft surgery, she maintained Friday during her estranged husband’s sentencing.

The victim, Marcella Oliver, told the judge that she had texted pictures of the severe burns to her back, shoulder and buttocks to Oliver, so he could see the extent of her injuries, and that his callous response to those photos — taken by nurses during the woman’s 16-day stay at the Bayview Burn Center in Baltimore — stunned her.

“He texted back, ‘Burn, baby, burn. How do you like being burned?’,” Marcella, 42, told the judge during the Cecil County Circuit Court hearing.

Marcella recalled that incident during a victim-impact statement in which she detailed how Oliver attacked her about 5:30 p.m. on July 15 inside the kitchen of their home in the 500 block of Broad Street, including the dark foreboding she sensed seconds before he threw the pot of boiling water amid tension between them.

“There was a pot of boiling water on the stove, but there was no food in it and there was no food nearby,” Marcella said, adding that Oliver suddenly doused her with the boiling water. “Steam was rising off my body . . . I was in excruteating pain, a pain like I’ve never felt before.”

An ambulance transported the woman to the Baltimore hospital — Oliver had walked away from crime scene — and en route she experienced profound thoughts of her family members, including the son, now 11, whom she and Oliver had together during their 14-year marriage.

I thought I was going to die,” said Marcella, who is a registered nurse.

[...snip...]

Oliver told the judge that he didn’t intend to the throw the boiling water on his wife during their argument, commenting, “I just flipped out.”

(The judge later responded that it isn’t possible to accidentally throw boiling water on someone.)

Oliver and his assistant public defender, John Buck, told the judge that Oliver had been battling alcoholism, drug abuse and mental health issues, which, after the incident, landed him in the Perry Point Veterans Administration Hospital, where he surrendered himself to police several days later.

Buck told the judge that Oliver served in the U.S. Army from 1977 to 1982 and that his employment history includes management positions — 14 years with K-Mart and nine years with McDonalds. He also reported that Oliver has two sons — ages 37 and 20 — from a previous relationship.

you know, i think all of this traces back to AL GREEN
:sas2:

remember when a crazy ex-girlfriend broke in his house
busted in while he was taking a bath
& threw steaming hot grits on him
then ran in the next room and blew her brains out
:whoa:

i mean, i don't know if steaming hot grits or boiling water would be worse??

:sas1:

anyway, that was his cue to throw his career in the bushes and become a minister :ohlawd:
