Burnout Spiritual Successor Teased by Criterion Founders
Do you want it to follow Burnout 2, 3, or 4's path?

The two founders of Criterion Games, developer of the Burnout series, have teased the possibility of a spiritual successor to the popular racing game series.

Three Fields Entertainment, a studio founded last year by Criterion founders Alex Ward and Fiona Sperry, sent out tweets this week that sound promising for Burnout fans who aren't especially attached to the Burnout name. "Two things. Our first game is a multiplayer sports game. Coming Spring 2016. Then we make a driving game," the first tweetreads.

"What sort of driving game you ask? A spiritual successor. Speed. Traffic. And crashing. Lots and lots of crashing," the second adds, clearly referencing Burnout, which was famous for its crashes.

The various entries in the Burnout series--of which there are four main games--were fairly different from each other. This raises the question of which game this new one would follow in the footsteps of. Three Fields itself seems uncertain.

"Spiritual successor to which one though??? The second, the third, or the fourth one??" a final tweetreads.

Setting aside the fact that Burnout 3: Takedown is the correct answer, it's encouraging news that the Burnout series could continue in some form. EA doesn't seem to have pursued the possibility much in the seven years since Paradise, with the only new Burnout being small, downloadable spinoff Burnout Crash.

Criterion shifted from working on Burnout to take over the Need for Speed series in 2009. In 2013, most of Criterion's staff was moved over to Ghost Games to continue focusing on NFS, leaving Criterion with a relatively low headcount. Ward and Sperry left the studio not long after.

Criterion still exists and is working on new projects. Those apparently don't include a Burnout HD collection, a possibility the studio recently shot down.

PLEASE be track based with beautiful tracks, graphics, cars and an insane sense of speed.

Knowing EA though, it'll be a bland open world, with no thought behind the tracks and some dumb gimmick.
Also online only.

exactly what I thought when I read the title. no more open world racers please. give me that classic burnout with set tracks with hidden paths, and jumps and shyt. I'll take barriers over taking a wrong turn and getting lost during an open world race any day

Burnout Paradise is one of my favorite games. The single player/ online multiplayer decision was terrible but it is a beautiful game that had a lot of depth. I did like the open world of Paradise because they packed a lot into it but don't mind it returning to a track based format. I just need that racing crash action back in my life. I also hope they don't DLC this game to death if it ever comes to fruition.

One thing I hated about that open world bs in Paradise was that it made people soft with all the cruising around town. When you took people down - even in races - dudes would get heated on the mic, boot you from their room or leave yours. Take downs and ridiculously over the top crashes is what the game was about, not scenic routes and clean friendly racing :camby:

That shyt was dope as fukk, breh.

Paradise was dope as fukk, don't get it twisted.:whoa:. It's just the track based Burnouts were way better. Traffic checking wasn't as fun in Paradise. I missed that feeling of feeling like Bullet Bill down a track. :krs:

So beautiful brehs. :mjcry:
