Got 5 thousand to work with. Should I even bother or do the smart thing and go with a Honda? The horror stories I've heard with some BM's got me like :sadcam:

Go with the Honda, in the price range you'll get a high mileage, abused, gas guzzling machine.

The repairs, the repairs :ohlawd::ohlawd::ohlawd::ohlawd::ohlawd:

5k to buy a used bmw? :wtf: You sound like you want a BMW just to say you have a BMW. What can you get? Like a 98 BMW 3 series? I'd go with something more reasonable, But if you really wanted a BMW save up some more breh.

Though I don't disagree with what others are saying, my girl bought a 99 328i sedan (E46-manual) about a year and change ago for around 5K (CDN.) Had roughly 125miles/200km on it.

I tried to steer her to a 99-00 or 01-05 Civic but she really like that Bimmer.

Anywho the car has absolutely been rock solid so far, not one repair needed (brakes coming up soon though). And she gets better MPG than my previous Integra ever did. Just have to find one that has the right owner.

Go to the library and look up Consumer Reports issues on used cars. Get a bunch of them from different years. You'll find which BMWs (model and year) were more problematic. Not all 3 series are bad, not all are good. Not all 5 series are bad, not all are good.
A used BMW is okay if you are a grease monkey. You'll want to get a Haynes or Chilton manual for the car you want and a set of metric tools. Make sure you have extra cash for maintenance. Parts are more expensive than domestic cars.

In the $5,000 range, you'll be able to get a newer used Honda compared to a used BMW. A very high-mileage older BMW is doable but will probably be in condition that will require an engine rebuild, clutch, struts, etc.

Honest opinion. Got get an Acura Legend (coupe if you can find one). That was my first car and I would buy another one if I saw one for sale on the street. With it being so ahead of its time when it dropped you wont be missing many features that new cars have now. P

If you get the BM everything might be ok depending on what year and model you get. However if something does go wrong it's going to hurt your wallet REALLY bad.

With a budget of 5K why do you want to go euro?

For 5k you can get a high mileage bmw but I wouldn't spend money on one where the own can't provide details on maintenance. A bmw can run very good well into the 200k mile rage but it has to be very well maintained, and maintenance aint cheap.

I remember my coworker, who's cheap as fukk, wanted to get a budget BMW, picked up a late 90's 5 series. My favorite of them, but he tried to be cheap w/ repairs and everything, now he can't even sell it.

He would start up the engine and it sounded like a coffee can filled with nuts and bolts shaking. :snoop:

For $5k, grab a Maxima. Stylish, roomy, and fast. Save up for the Bimmer. While you can find a good one, the chances are greater that you'll spend 5k more in break/fix in the first year. Don't risk it breh.

2nd choice, get a Camry. Solid choice too
