He starting making his own low budget type shows and called networks and offered them the shows for free in exchange for ad time in the middle of the night since networks dont really have content for those hours. I'm sure it's not that easy but that was the gist of his strategy. He's done some interviews on it, researching him on google for a little bit would be well worth your time.
