A football star had his college career ended in an attack from his pregnant girlfriend, but he hopes to recover in time to make it to the NFL.

Florida International University tight end Jonnu Smith was allegedly attacked by his 20-year-old girlfriend, Mary Gaspar, on October 31.

Gaspar is charged with felony aggravated battery for pouring boiling water on Smith while inside the tight end's apartment.

Gaspar is charged with felony aggravated battery for pouring boiling water on Smith while inside the tight end's apartment. She is five months pregnant with their child

Gaspar, who is five months pregnant, told police she was 'feeling extremely emotional and stressed' and added she and Smith had argued throughout the day about their relationship, the Miami Herald reports.

Smith suffered severe burns and had to be hospitalized after the incident.

Gaspar was arrested two days later. She has since pleaded not guilty, and was released on a pretrial order.

Smith is third in FIU history with 17 career touchdown catches, and fourth with 175 receptions. He caught 39 passes for 441 yards and three touchdowns this season and will likely be considered for the NFL Draft.
