I think it was scared of something else that we or the owner of the house doesn't know about.
Could be a coyote, bear, bobcat out there it didn't want to deal with.

They're naturally tunnel creatures, they can both walk and dig backwards just as fast as they move forwards. In this case, he seemed like he was treating the house like his tunnel and didn't want to be exposed in bright daylight with nowhere to hide. And he might have been trying to avoid getting hit on the head so he went with the backwards approach.
