I don't think he tossed his son to save himself, he tossed him out of reaction/shock. He went to pick him back up when he kicked the rac00n off of him.

You see this play out on a daily basis. The first comment presents him as a coward abandoning his child, so people refuse to see the father creating distance between the threat and son, removing the threat and then taking his son to safety.
