He had so much faith in Gohan he did that shyt. So egoless, he thought he plateaued at Cell. Bet on his son. Died and got stronger after death and then brought a technique back for his son and his sons friend. And they learned SS3.
He couldve took out Buu, but he wanted Trunks and Goten to learn the fight so they could be ready for the future. He didnt gatekeep any moves, he was passing down techniques and helping nurture the next generation. He knew one day he was gonna plateau and was readying up the legacy. Knew he wouldnt be able to hold everyones hand forever. Real foresight and big picture thinking.
Unlike old nikkas in real life.
The old nikkas is supposed to teach the next gen and instill confidence and faith in them. He brought out his sons most powerful self (at the time) at a young age. Didnt treat his kids like dumbasses and saw they all had potential.

Goku was laid up with heart palpitations from the weakest android in the series. Black ran from the Vegeta fade after getting mushed through a mountain then put down by his son. And Beerus slapping whoever wife he want. Vegeta put hands on Beerus in a way that Goku couldn’t.
Frieza worked Goku for 15eps tooAnyways here’s a collage of vegeta getting ho’d out by the entire cast(Part 1)
Goku completely ducked Imperfect Cell fade and quit against PC

He didn't cry because he lost or got beat, he cried because he realized that the last hope at avenging his race some getback was CACarot, a sellout who didn't think of himself as a Saiyan and hated his own people
