University of Kentucky coach John Calipari is finalizing plans for an unprecedented two-day campus scouting combine for NBA executives to evaluate his star-laden roster of professional prospects, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Calipari has invited officials of the 30 NBA teams to send personnel to Lexington, Ky., on Oct. 11-12 to watch his players do everything from run full-court five-on-five and NBA-style pick-and-roll sets to individual skill work.

The event is a chance for Calipari to impress a throng of top high school recruits on campus visits and once again frame his program as college basketball's best NBA feeder system. Kentucky is expected to be a consensus preseason No. 1 in the polls.

After the combine, Calipari plans to shut out NBA executives and scouts from his practices for several weeks – perhaps even months – into the season, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

This way, Calipari can avoid the distractions that a constant parade of NBA scouts can present to so many talented young players in the practice gym.

NBA personnel aren't allowed to interact with college undergraduates, but Calipari can simply shape his workouts to be conducive to the NBA's needs.

As one executive laughed, "We're just there as B-roll for his recruiting videos."

Kentucky has a tremendous roster of NBA prospects, including five players in Draft Express’ list of the Top 30 prospects in the world. Freshman center Karl Towns (No. 3), junior center Willie Cauley-Stein (No. 10), sophomore center Dakari Johnson (No. 21), sophomore guard Andrew Harrison (No. 28), and sophomore forward Marcus Lee (No. 30) made the list.

Several more players, including sophomore Aaron Harrison and freshmen Devin Booker and Trey Lyles, are considered future first-round picks.

Its strictly a recruiting ploy, but a smart recruiting ploy. Doesn't make sense to showcase freshmen prospects before they've even played a game at the college level, then shut the scouts out when they have developed their games some. A combine like this would be more beneficial after the season is over.

Bottom line is, this is a different year for UK recruiting wise. They aren't the favorites to land their top targets (Newman, Brown, Ellenson) like they have been in the past. Cal is gonna have to pull out all the stops to land those guys, and making sure a sea of NBA scouts are there when they go on their visit to uk is a great tactic to help him gain ground. I don't think he'll get any more than one of those three, but its a smart more on his part. And that's coming from a Louisville fan.

Hm. Really. Because 247 crystal ball has us getting Jaylen Brown and Malik Newman. I don't want that pasty souless ginger CAC ellenson, and we might get Check Diallo

Look a little closer at the Crystal Ball breh. UK's percentage is what it is because a large amount of experts predicted UK before the summer recruiting sessions.

Nobody's predicted Brown to UK in two months. Since those two months, there's been 8 experts predict UCLA, 3 predict Georgia and one pick Kansas. General consensus has been that Brown may go Adidas and that UCLA is the heavy favorite.

Most of Newman's predictions are from over a year ago. Mississippi State picked up a lot of steam with him over the summer and most people now view them as the favorite. However, if any of the three I named go to UK, I think its him. Ellenson's a virtual lock for Marquette.

I think UK has a good shot with Zimmerman, but they gotta go up against his hometown school of UNLV. Could get Diallo, but the winds are starting to blow towards St. Johns for his recruitment.

Really tho, the thing that's slowed recruiting down for UK this year is that their roster is so stacked. Really, I don't think UK really needs a good recruiting class this year to still be a title contender in the '15-'16 season. But as far as Brown and Newman, I definitely think that UK has a shot with them since they won't commit until the end of this season. But I definitely don't think UK is the leader for either of them right now. That could change tho.
