Cam Newton: 'I'm an African-American QB that might scare some people' with unique skills

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton said he believes his race is a factor in the way people view him.

Newton was asked Wednesday during a news conference in Charlotte why he thinks people remain critical of him despite the MVP-like season he has put up this season.

"I've said it since Day 1, I'm an African-American quarterback that might scare some people, because they haven't seen anything they can compare me to," Newton said.

Newton's point was clear: He will be true to himself in the way he approaches and plays the game and hasn't changed for anyone.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he doesn't think Newton wants to be known as "an African-American quarterback", but just as a "quarterback."

Rivera said he believes some people think players should be stoic, but he believes 'you should be able to come out and have fun."
