If he knew exactly what to do to win but he was physically not a threat.

Would an army follow him?

I'm sure Cesar and Khan and others were riding.

Was Napoleon a physical bad ass? I'm thinking not.

Hitler looked like a scrub.. but he was a soldier in WWI.

Being able to.physically fight doesn't seem like a great qualification for commanding an army. The planning is more like nerd shyt that happens in a room with drawings and equations.

Can one be a great general without being a great soldier?

Yes and no.

The job of rallying the troops would have to be designated to someone who would serve as an intermediary which is what happens.

You can set in place systems to develop and fund and army. You can influence the actions of general who can command the soldiers, but the majority of foot soldier are not going to respect someone they view as soft.

Yes.
Back in the day a bit different because you would be drafted into the military at a fightting age.
Plus there are lots of roles that dont invovle direct combat in every discipline.

Having charisma or having people believe in either their countries eight/freedoms or whatever or beloeve in the vision of the leader of the nation helps.

And alot of drugs too :feedme:

I think he was extremely short and may have suffered from short man syndrome. With that said, he his attitude probably came off as imposing more so than his physical stature.

Also remember, humans were shorter back then. For instance, the average height of ancient romans was like 5’5.

At the top of any organization whether military or otherwise, the most important skill is strategy. Strategy requires intellect. So most of the people at the top of the military pyramid are most likely going to be flexing more mental muscle than physical muscle.

A true warrior as the figurehead and a egghead behind the scenes pushing buttons...

That's actually a solution I thought of, but only if the bond between the two was indivisible
