Can anyone explain US sentencing policies for sick fukks?

• John Wilson Jr, 41, was convicted in September of murdering Kelli O'Laughlin, 14, on October 27, 2011
• Kelli's mother discovered her daughter lying face down in a pool of blood in the kitchen
• Brenda O'Laughlin later received a series of texts from Kelli's stolen phone, one of which read: 'She wanted to tell you something before I killed her'
• Wilson pretended to be asleep during his sentencing and taunted Kelli's mother after she spoke

I know 160 years sounds pretty hardcore,but why not just sentence him to natural life/life without parole? I mean personally I would have hung the b*stard or thrown him in a shark tank , but if tax payers must pay for this waste's food and lodging for the rest of his life,why not just say he is never getting out of jail?

Different charges carry different sentences.

So let's suppose someone is charged with 3 murders, 3 rapes, breaking and entering, and kidnapping.

The convicted person could get 75 years for the murders (25 years per each murder).....30 years for the rapes (10 years per each rape)....etc.

That's how you get 160 years and stuff.
