When a rappers record label is distributed by a major label, what exactly does that mean?

And how do Advances work? I'm sure that's considered an investment by a label, so they want that back with interest. Is it your responsibility to pay for all those expenses (tours, studio sessions, etc) with your advance? Somebody school me on this shyt.
