Have a computer that's about 5 years old, but the specs are pretty good for a regular home unit. 6 gigs DDR3 ram, INTEL processor, 1TB harddrive. Things run well. Have a paid antivirus that is supposed to be the best out, nothing is coming up as malicious. I use Ccleaner once in a blue, all is copacetic.

PROBLEMS:

1) unfortunately, the internet is very slow ( use USB adapter to connect to network -- router in other room)
2) I can't figure out how to install Windows 10, tried at least 6 times, acts like it's upgrading, cpu restarts, see windows 10 logo, but it never upgrades and sometimes get a message Windows 10 can't be downloaded. Others times it doesn't even pretend to upgrade, it just won't let me.
3) I haven't been able to Defrag in about 2 years.

Possible solutions:
someone told me it's a hard drive problem, don't know what that means or what to do?

I'm thinking I can erase everything, reinstall windows 7 then get the upgrade again. Only thing I have to lose is a few hard to find/classic albums.

Ahh I experienced these exact problems after my windows upgrade. Here's a small kept secret within tech community: delete you system32 folder. It's on the C: drive and what's this does initialize your driver's so if the system will be optimized as if it were new. Just do a restart after and walah!

I'm thinking I can erase everything, reinstall windows 7 then get the upgrade again. Only thing I have to lose is a few hard to find/classic albums.

Need some more info:
  • What browser are you using?
  • What antivirus do you use?
  • What internet speed do you pay for?
  • Do you download stuff from the Internet a lot, or watch movies on websites?

If it was me, I'd figure what's going on before trying to upgrade. First I'd grab a copy of a program like Hard Disk Sentinel to see if your drive is failing. If so, you'll have to grab another drive anyway. Next I'd get a copy of malware bytes and do a full scan 2-3 times on your machine to see what's going on.

It does sound like a possible hard drive failure, but you have a few things that could go wrong. Either way, you should never hold all of your data and your OS on the same drive. If you don't/can't install a second hard drive, at least partition your drive so you won't be as susceptible to data loss when your OS fails. Once you do this, you can easily install/reinstall your OS without having to erase all your documents.

Grab all of your essential data and back it up to either an external drive/cd/DVD/usb/cloud or something. Make sure your shyt is backed up somewhere before trying to install/upgrade.

As for your internet problem, has it ever worked as advertised? Does it work fast on hard wired (directly hooked in) devices or on wifi? If so you might be able to get a powerline adapter that would help you out.

When installing, your internet *shouldn't* make a difference, but take the adapter out/disconnect the Internet when installing to see if it helps.

I can walk you through or point you to how to do everything if you need help.

In reference to question 2...have you tried downloading windows 10 and creating a bootable usb/cd?
If you don't want to lose your information have you considered creating a partition and then installing Windows 10 on the new partition? It will allow you to dual boot

Thanks for suggestion, skimmed through them, haven't taken it all in.

Only use computer for word processing, emails, and music or wrestling forums. Rarely download, sometime stream, but if i can fix things up, I prolly would engage more often.

For internet and general stuff, use Kaspersky, got a decent free modem that's new, router is old and parts of it fall apart, network adapter is Cisco and prolly not anything fancy. Use cheapest internet speed package, but still feel it should run quicker. For a while it was barely running, but this is the speed now, and most things work out:

sometimes download goes up to 10mbps

I think the specs are great, and that it can last another two years if I tune it up.
