it can but you got to learn how. that means performing reality checks throughout every day until you perform a reality check in your dream.

Lucid dreaming is how I was able to conquer my constantly reoccurring nightmares from when I was a kid.
I didn't know there was a name for it, but eventually I realized in the scariest moments that I had the ability to "shape" reality
within my dreams.

More to the topic, the brain knows, but I had a dream a week ago that a man came to my door step, I opened the door, and he shot me
point blank in the forehead. I was still somewhat inbetween dreaming and waking up, and I made peace with my death.

The joke was on me, I woke up:ohhh: Someone could have offed me at that moment before I woke up and it wouldn't have changed anything.

Sometimes I can recognize I'm in a dream and purposely open my eyes to wake up by widening them in the dream.

Lol @ dreaming. I smoke my dreams away.

i can tell when i'm dreaming. Not all the time but sometimes i'll just realize something isn't quite right. Or i'll realize i'm asleep in my room so whatevers going on must be a dream. Thats when it turns into a lucid dream.

Lucids are fun. Whenever i have one i like to go explore the city. Its crazy to see how things look in my minds eye. Like i'm exploring my own brain.
