Can we all agree that Lil Wayne started the "open colorism" trend in today's music?

Now colorism has been around in hip-hop even before him, as light skin girls were seen as top tier and preferential. However, it was never vocalized til Lil Wayne said "I like em long hair thick red bone" on Every Girl In The World back in '09.

After this, it made it seem okay for other rappers and singers to start vocalizing their preference for light skin women... on various songs Off the top of my head, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Juicy J, Game, Trey Songz, French Montana, Young Thug, Birdman, Kodak Black, etc. I don't remember rappers talking bout "red bones" until Lil Wayne said. And Lil Wayne himself has so many lyrics about "red bones" "red bytches" etc etc... I'm sure there's some Trick Daddy songs or some shyt on the low... but I'm talking about the popularity and the trend, which Wayne started.

'my first addiction, GI Joes and Icees/ after that it was light skin girls and Nikes' - Jada
'and all the wavy lightskin girls is loving me now' Jay Z

:francis:

I said, Wayne made it a popular trend and more "open" ... Wayne was the biggest rapper in the world in '09. Things he said on tracks (especially radio singles) mattered. I didn't know light skin girls was so "poppin" until Wayne and the string of rappers/singers afterwards made it so apparent.

I completely disagree about Lil' Wayne making it popular trend. Rappers reguarly rapped about lightskin/redbone chick in the early 2000's.

Above the fray.
I seen the same thing happen to Kane

"sexy young ladies of the light skinned breed
you got, you got, you got what I need!"

Big Daddy Kane almost got run out of hip hop because of the backlash to those lines..from like 1988..think the song was "Down the Line" from his first album

actually on the bugged tip was the song

If you didn't know about colorism until Wayne started talking about light skin girls that's a you issue. Also the point is this has been around forever. There were always more light women in videos, rappers been spitting about light skin females since back when

You showing your age op.

Not like that. You would see light skin girls in music videos all the time... but it was never no "light skin" or "red bone" this or that in every other song like it is now. Wayne started the "open-ness" of it.

Why'd that need a spoiler? lol

But yeah, see back then you couldn't be as open about it as you can now. Which is the point I'm getting at and saying Wayne made it cool to be racist... or colorist.
