In the 2000s that shyt started going away for two reasons:
1. Games were already running like ass. If you render the same image multiple times for split screen that makes performance worse. We'd get games running at 60fps in single player then 30fps for multi-player.
2. Its lucrative to force people to pay for your online subscription by removing the option to just play the game with your friends for free.
But we really are getting to the point where even a top of the line videocard can't guarantee a locked 120fps or 60fps at max settings. The Nintendo direct showed off games with split screen options. They know families buy consoles and want to play together. They know it's ridiculous to expect a couple living in the same home to each buy a second console, second game, separate TV, and separate online subscription to play with each other.
Performance wise we are at a point of diminishing returns. The biggest new graphics tech(ray tracing) is really a development time saving technology and most people don't see an obvious difference between a game with path tracing and a game without it.
So at this point, do you think developers will focus more on performance and optimizing the art style so the game looks good and runs well on split screen? Do you want that to be common again?
