"The Krusher" meets "The "Bully" on Jan. 30, live on DAZN.

In what can be described as a crossroads fight, former three-time light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev returns to the ring in the main event against fast-rising knockout artist Bektemir Melikuziev on Saturday, January 30, at an unknown venue in Russia at a catchweight of 178 pounds. The fight will be streamed live on DAZN and seen in more than 200 countries, including the U.S., Russia, and Uzbekistan. Information regarding the arena will be announced shortly.

Kovalev, 37, (34-4-1, 29 KOs) fights for the first time since losing the WBO light heavyweight title via 11th-round knockout to Canelo Alvarez in November 2019. The 37-year-old had been set to return in a 180-pound catchweight bout with Sullivan Barrera on April 25 but the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "The Krusher" is excited to get back at it as he embarks on a path to secure a crack to become champion once again.

"I am glad that after a long break, I am starting my journey back to the title of world champion," Kovalev said in a press release. "The fact that this fight is scheduled to be in Russia gives me even more motivation and strength. I want to please my fellow countrymen again with my boxing and a beautiful victory."

Melikuziev (6-0, 5 KOs) had a highly decorated amateur career. The devastating puncher from Uzbekistan captured the silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics, a silver medal at the 2015 AIBA World Boxing Championships, and won gold medals at the 2015 and 2017 Asian Championships. The 24-year-old is coming off a third-round knockout of Alan Campa on October 30. He's excited to be getting the opportunity to square off with one of the premier names in the 175-pound division.

"Sergey Kovalev is one of the biggest boxing stars of the last decade," Melikuziev said. "This is exactly the type of opportunity I have wanted since turning professional, and I will be very well prepared for victory on January 30!"

New venue for Kovalev vs. ‘Bek Bully’
Crossroads fights shifting from Russia to United States

Dan Rafael

Jan 13

The crossroads bout between former three-time light heavyweight world titleholder Sergey Kovalev and up-and-comer Bektemir “Bek Bully” Melikuziev has been moved to a new location.

The fight, initially scheduled headline a Jan. 30 card on DAZN at the Luzhniki Arena in Moscow, instead will take place without spectators at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, because of the worsening Covid-19 situation, a source with direct knowledge of the switch told me on Wednesday.

Kovalev (34-4-1, 29 KOs), 37, a Russia native fighting out of Santa Monica, California, and Melikuziev (6-0, 5 KOs), 24, an Uzbekistan native fighting out of Indio, California, will meet at a contract weight of 178 pounds, much heavier than the 168 Melikuziev fought at in his last bout.

Kovalev will be fighting for the first time he lost his 175-pound world title to Canelo Alvarez by brutal 11th-round knockout on Nov. 2, 2019 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Alvarez had moved up two weight classes to challenge him for his title. Kovalev was scheduled to fight former light heavyweight world title challenger Sullivan Barrera at 180 pounds in the main event of a DAZN card on April 25 at Fantasy Springs, but the show was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Melikuziev, a southpaw, has been moved quickly by Golden Boy Promotions because of his elite amateur career.

He was a silver medalist at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, claimed a bronze medal at the 2017 World Amateur Championships, won a silver medal at the 2015 World Amateur Championships and won gold medals at the 2015 and 2017 Asian Championships.

He is coming off a third-round knockout of Alan Campa on Oct. 30 and also owns professional victories over Clay Collard and Vaughn Alexander.

Sergey Kovalev Tests Positive For Synthetic Testosterone, Putting Jan. 30 Bout in Jeopardy
By Dan Rafael

Published On Thu Jan 14, 2021, 12:22 PM EST

Former three-time light heavyweight world titleholder Sergey Kovalev has tested positive synthetic testosterone, meaning his fight with up-and-comer Bektemir “Bek Bully” Melikuziev likely will be canceled.

The fight, contracted at a catch weight of 178 pounds, was scheduled to take place as the main event of a DAZN card at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, after having been moved this week from Luzhniki Arena in Moscow due to the worsening COVID-19 situation.

Kovalev gave a sample to the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association on Dec. 30 in Las Vegas, where he has been training, and the positive result was returned on Wednesday, according to the letter VADA sent to Kovalev’s team and others involved in the event outlining the details of the positive test.

“Adverse analytical finding: IRMS (isotope-ratio mass spectrometry) results are consistent with exogenous origin of testosterone and metabolites,” according to the letter, a copy of which was obtained by BoxingScene.com.

The letter, sent to the California State Athletic Commission, the Association of Boxing Commissions, Golden Boy Promotions and Main Events, added that “Mr. Kovalev has the right to promptly request analysis of the ‘B’ sample at his expense.”

“We are aware of the adverse finding from VADA,” Main Events CEO Kathy Duva, Kovalev’s longtime promoter, told BoxingScene. “Sergey Kovalev has been proven to be a clean fighter throughout the many years that he has been tested by VADA. VADA was contracted for this fight at his insistence, as he has requested for almost all of his fights going back several years. He maintains that he did not purposefully ingest any banned substances. We have made arrangements to have his supplements tested for contamination and will request that VADA test his B sample.”

Kovalev (34-4-1, 29 KOs), 37, a Russia native fighting out of Santa Monica, California, has not fought since he lost the WBO 175-pound world title to Canelo Alvarez by brutal 11th-round knockout on Nov. 2, 2019 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Alvarez had moved up two weight classes to challenge him for his title.

Kovalev, who is owed a seven-figure comeback fight as part of the deal for the Alvarez fight, was scheduled to take on former light heavyweight world title challenger Sullivan Barrera at 180 pounds in the main event of a DAZN card on April 25 at Fantasy Springs, but that show was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Melikuziev (6-0, 5 KOs), 24, an Uzbekistan native fighting out of Indio, California, was an amateur standout and one of boxing’s top rising prospects.

Melikuziev, a southpaw, was willing to move up in weight to face Kovalev after having had his last bout at 168 pounds.

Kovalev vs. Melikuziev Officially Canceled After Failed Drug Test
By Jake Donovan

Published On Fri Jan 15, 2021, 04:03 PM EST

As Sergey Kovalev attempts to clear his name, Bektemir Melikuziev is now left without a fight.

The planned crossroads showdown between the two is longer in the works, with the entire Jan. 30 show now canceled as confirmed by Golden Boy Promotions on Friday. The event was due to take place at Fantasy Spring Casino in Indio, California, but was placed in jeopardy after Kovalev tested positive for synthetic testosterone—as reported by BoxingScene.com on Thursday.

Further consideration over the development resulted in the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) refusing to any longer sanction the event under current circumstances.

“Upon learning of Kovalev’s adverse finding, the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) determined that they must cancel the event,” Golden Boy announced in a statement. “While we are crushed for “The Bully” (Melikuziev), we know that he will nevertheless have a tremendous year in 2021.

“We look forward to our next scheduled boxing event on Feb. 13.”

sergey-kovalev%20(4)_15.jpg

The bout—which was to have taken place at a maximum catchweight of 178-pounds—was relocated from Luzhniki Arena in Moscow to Indio, California earlier in the week. The good news lasted less than 24 hours, before it was learned that Kovalev (34-4-1, 29KOs) came up dirty in a random drug test as conducted through Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA).

Kovalev—a former three-time light heavyweight titlist—professed his innocence through promoter Main Events, who informed BoxingScene.com of plans to have the “B” Sample tested, as is the right of any drug testing participant. Main Events will also have Kovalev’s training camp supplements tested for potential contamination.

None of it does any good for Melikuziev (6-0, 5KOs), a 2016 Olympic Silver medalist from Uzbekistan who is now left without an opponent and a fight date.

Also gone with the cancellation is a planned middleweight bout between Ireland’s Jason Quigley and second-generation boxer Shane Mosley Jr. which was to have served as the chief support.

No indication has been given as to whether the fight will be relocated, as Golden Boy’s planned Feb. 13 show could be in need of another bout. The main event for that night is in peril, as Shavkat Rakhimov was forced to withdraw from his mandatory title challenge of defending 130-pound titlist Joseph ‘JoJo’ Diaz after testing positive for COVID.
