Cannabis may make you remember things that never happened

A recent National Geographic article explores how THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, doesn't just impair memory—it can actively generate false memories of events that never occurred. This finding comes from a 2026 Washington State University study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, where researchers tested 120 regular cannabis users in a double-blind experiment.

Study Design

Participants received either moderate (20mg) or high (40mg) THC doses via vaporized cannabis, or a placebo, then completed memory tasks targeting various systems like verbal recall, visuospatial memory, and prospective memory (e.g., remembering future actions). THC users were nearly twice as likely to falsely recall words or details not presented, such as theme-related terms from word lists where the core word was omitted.

Key Memory Impacts

  • False recall: Users confidently remembered nonexistent items, showing THC disrupts memory reconstruction rather than just weakening it
  • Source confusion: Difficulty distinguishing real memories from imagined ones or their origins (e.g., conversation vs. reading).
  • Dose indifference: Moderate and high doses caused similar distortions, even in experienced users

Implications

These effects raise concerns for eyewitness reliability, daily decision-making under influence, and legal contexts like testimony. Lead researcher Carrie Cuttler noted THC interferes with neural pathways for memory encoding and retrieval, leaving familiarity intact but accuracy compromised.
