Really have no desire to watch this but can I get a neutral opinion in regard to needing to watch this before Avengers?

If thats all you're watching for, skip it.

The big "avengers" lead in they were advertising is literally just Carol showing up

Pretty much this. The whole film was pretty much telegraphed the whole way and nothing really stuck out, Marvel really didn't want to take any chances with this one and it shows.
If this was a Thor/Superman I would still feel the same way so shyts a moot point.

It doesn't matter really since CM looks like it's going to make a cool billion anyway

Also, I dunno if its a response to the (white) fan boy hate, but the whole blonde white gurl= minority too! caping is annoying.

On god its by far the most insufferable thing about this movie.

Or even the 4th. Marvel's celebration of white wimminz is severing brehs connection to reality. Got dudes talking about "Only white guys say that " in one post then in the next "you guys are problematic toxic mansplainers" sounding like yall been locked in a starbucks all day.

This nauseating frumpy white bytches vs white nerds war needs to stay on reddit/youtube/wherever the fukk it came from.

This has been by far the least fun marvel movie to discuss, that much is assured

There have been no like 22 MCU films and other than minor characters like SW and BW. None had really been prominent and none ever had their own film.

So this IS the FIRST MCU woman Super Hero movie.

And they have the right to celebrate it just like DC equally celebrated WW being their first DCCU woman super hero movie. Cuz that too wasn’t then first, second, 3rd, or 4th... but that wasn’t the point either.

So basically after 11 years and 21 movies.... to a degree for Marvel, one can argue that “history has been made”

What the hell is going on in here? The amount of hurt is insane.

It would have been better if they had gone with Ms. Marvel powers. Approx class 50 strength, invulnerability, flight, 7th sense, Kree influences. Why? Because shiny light powers are hard to represent well in movies. Ms. Marvel has a useful powerset covering offensive, defensive and a unique psychic sense. They didn't need to go binary with her. And if they did then they needed to create a better power reprsentation,

I'm not saying that because she is a woman. If anything the rise of Cap to THE authority figure position in the team shows that characterization is more important that raw power levels when it comes to getting the audiences' respect, the teams' respect and when it comes to projecting authority in the on screen narrative.

They clearly thought long and hard about how to do that for Dr. Strange and settled on essentially weapon energy constructs for his standard power manifestation. I.e. something tacit, relatively close to what we can relate to, reasonably comic accurate and which allows for Kung-fu moves in place of magical FX during battles to keep costs down and kinetic realism up. Derrickson created the power motiv in Dr Strange and the Russo's crowned it off with the protracted power-pre and postamble signature movements and with the sound effects. This alone elevated Strange from middling Avenger to fan favorite in 1 movie.



The Russo's have done the same thing with Cap's shield and have done so in a way that was absent in Cap 1 and Avengers 1. They have made the donning of his shield his signature uebermenschlich motiv and as such there is significance in their movies when he drops it, picks it up or tightens the straps in a way that didn't exist even in Avengers 1. Picking the shield up in the Russos world has narrative and power projection significance above his actual power levels.

I think the Russo's are going to introduce signature movements and sounds to Captain Marvel that she didn't have in her own movie. Hopefully she has the physical acting chops to carry it off. They tried it in the storage center scene but they need to establish a set sound and visual power pre and post sequence.
