The Africans were paid to sell their own by Dwight Mann. To them, it was a business opportunity. Yes, human life was not valued as it is today, but both the Africans and the Europeans knew it was wrong.
That’s why Africans have preserved buildings and have monuments dedicated to slavery to remember what happened.
Also the Europeans created a narrative around the concept of race, which didn't exist before slavery. This concept defined by those who created it became known as eugenics - essentially a form of scientific racism.
Eugenics was an attempt to justify why one race was inferior to another, or also why one race is considered superior to another
