Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson announced Monday that general manager Marty Hurney has been relieved of his duties. Hurney had been general manager of the Panthers since 2002.

"This was an extremely difficult decision," Richardson said in a team statement. "Marty made every effort to bring success to the Panthers and took the team to a Super Bowl and two NFC championship games. Unfortunately, we have not enjoyed the success we hoped for in recent years. I have the greatest respect and admiration for Marty and will always appreciate the way he tirelessly served the organization."

Hurney was the team's general manager when the Panthers went to the 2003 Super Bowl.

"I am very fortunate to have been a part of one of the best organizations in the NFL since 1998," Hurney said.

"As General Manager I will always regret not helping us win the Super Bowl or having back-to-back winning seasons. I hope this change starts accomplishing the direction to those goals. I understand this decision by Mr. Richardson and will always have an extremely close relationship with him. I consider him the best owner in the NFL. I am responsible for everybody in coaching, the players, the scouts and everybody in football operations. After six weeks, we are 1-5 coming off a 6-10 season."

"This taste, this vibe -- I'm not buying it, man. And I don't know what it is, but something's going to have to change. Something's going to have to change real fast."

Good move. He lasted longer than he should've to be honest. And i hope Cam speaks out more. All them losing seasons in the last 10 years and the only marquee players on offense are Cam and Steve? Terrible. No line, no defense, no receiving weapons bar a 5'9 angry Steve Smith.

Deangelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart were both first round picks.

Greg Olsen was a first round pick and a weapon. Brandon Lafell was a second round pick. Stop with the weapons stuff.

Ill give you Deangelo and Johnathon (even though one should have been traded for picks or something a while ago), but there is no line as i said, gotta draft those too or acquire them somehow. How has Brandon Lafell worked out? Underperformed. All the busts on offense that i refuse to even mention. Their defense is a laughing stock. Its still piss poor that after all those opportunities to build the team its still in this state.

Have you seen them two nikkaz run this season? They have been god awful behind that line but I guess that's Cam's fault too huh. :upsetfavre:

I would think either Williams or Stewart would at the very least have success running the ball because of Newton's ability to run and throw. But spread option has been figured out and it ain't going to work. I remember the Panthers had a great O-Line not that long ago

The Panthers definitely needed a new GM though... they haven't been the same since Larry Fitzgerald and Kurt Warner torched them in the 2008 playoffs

Not to mention the defense is a sack of shyt. Their secondary hasn't been good in years and they give big contracts to nikkaz with constant serious injuries like Thomas Davis and Jon Beason.
