A government official says at least two people have been shot dead in a school in an aboriginal community in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan.
The official, who received reports from the scene, spoke on condition of anonymity Friday because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

The grade 7 through 12 La Loche Community School in the northern Saskatchewan community of La Loche is in lockdown.

Brad Wall, the premier of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, confirmed the shooting at the aboriginal community in the province. He said there are victims but did not say how many or release any other details.

The school's Facebook page says it will remain on lockdown until the Royal Canadian Police resolve the matter. It is asking the public to stay away.

Five Dead After Saskatchewan School Shooting; Two Critically Injured

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says five were killed in a rural community in Canada's north on Friday afternoon. Some of the victims lost their lives inside the La Loche Community School.

"I learned with deep sadness and shock today about the shooting at a high school and another location in Saskatchewan that involved multiple deaths and injuries," a statement from the Prime Minister's Office reads. It's not clear where the second shooting transpired.

La Loche, located in Northwest Saskatchewan, has a population of just 2,600 people.

Trudeau, who was briefed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police after the shooting, confirmed the shooting has ended and that police have a suspect in custody.

He added that two others were "critically, critically" injured.

While details on the victims have yet to emerge, early reports indicate that a teacher was among the wounded.

Earlier on Friday afternoon, a hospital in Saskatchewan confirmed that it was treating students for gunshot wounds. An emergency ambulance service also confirmed on Twitter that they dispatched a helicopter to the remote community.

"Obviously, this is every parent's worst nightmare," Trudeau told reporters from Davos, Switzerland. "The country's heart is breaking."





"This is something that you only see on TV most of the time," Teddy Clark, Chief of Clearwater River Dene Nation, told The Star Phoenix. He says that while guns are readily available in the community, they are primarily used for hunting.

"It's not a pretty scene there, right now," Clark later told CBC news, after speaking with his daughter, who was in the area.

La Loche, a predominately Aboriginal community, is a six hour drive North of Saskatoon, where serious injuries are likely being treated.





The school, which houses 900 students from pre-kindergarten to grade 12, posted a statement on Friday afternoon warning that an "emergency" was ongoing at the school.

"The elementary school is also under a lockdown which will not be lifted until we hear that it is safe," the school posted on Facebook. "We will not be allowing anyone in or out until we have a clear idea of what is going on."

The statement says that the incident happened in the Dene building, which houses grades seven through 12.

Friday marks the second deadliest school shooting in Canadian history. The deadliest, at the École Polytechnique in Montreal, claimed the lives of 14 women.

"It's been a very devastating day for the community," Buckley Belanger, the area's representative in the Saskatchewan legislature, told the CBC.

Premier Brad Wall posted a Facebook update an hour after reports emerged, expressing shock over the shooting.

"My thoughts and prayers are with all the victims, their families and friends and all the people of the community," Wall said.
