The thing is, there's nowhere to run on an island. You cant just pack up and drive to Georgia for a few days.
Im guessing you just have to try and get to some elevation to avoid flooding. In the future, islands probably need build some type of shelter in the mountains.
Mountain type shelters/Bunkers aren't really feasible, especially since alot of the surrounding areas are dirt/farm land that's prone to flooding and landslides. Western ideas and designs about turning mountains into bunkers, sort of spurn a 'concrete jungle' aesthetic that isn't too popular amongst Caribbean folk and for good reason. I know, some would argue "Would you rather live in a concrete jungle that's hurricane resistant or a bushy/hilly area prone to flooding that causes loss of life"
Properly managed and maintained shelters on flat land with up to code building protocols (Block holes filled with cement, Non sea sand, proper reinforced fasteners, screws, re-bar stirrups/ties, High grade material and workmanship etc..) garners better results, but the problem is that Governments present and past never really made this sort of thing a priority, unfortunately. For a place filled with so much hills and ghuts and streams, the infrastructure should be better maintained to minimalize flooding, as only up to a week or so before this storm started to threaten the region, did they start to seriously clear drainage routes; A thing that should be done REGARDLESS at the start of every Hurricane season.
It's a fukked up situation all around but Jamaica is strong, it will survive. I just hope they take the significant downtime they will experience to strengthen the infrastructure, 'cause as I type this, I can still look out and see so many Irma/Maria damaged houses and properties from 2017 with Governments that have done little to NOTHING to strengthen us, if we were to ever get hit with anything remotely similar to those storms.
I passed the fukk out during after Irma's Halftime show. And luckily it came during the day, so when the Eye passed over us, we had a bring and sunny time window to seek shelter elsewhere if your house was compromised. Had that shyt come at night, we'd have had way more dead than the initial 5-7 we lost during that time.
that we see cat 4/5 hurricanes on a regular basis now.
