I guess thats like saying Baseball team A shouldnt care how much Baseball team B is spending on their lineup.
Shouldn't our defense obligation be: defend America? And in fulfilling those obligations, wouldnt considering the size (i.e., budget) of potential threats be a consideration?
Negative. Baseball teams have the same objective.
We budget to meet our objectives. Other nations are wholly irrelevant.

edit: Your second point would be true if defending America was our only military obligation.

What would you say our objectives are?
Through a number of treaties and agreements America is responsible for not only the defense of its borders but some 60+ other nations.
We also(for better or worse) police the world in an effort to improve the global quality(and preservation) of life.
No other nation does this, and no other nation incurs its cost.

Imagine if Putin's Russia(or some other super villain) was in our position :sadcam:

From the tech side, it's inevitable that we will have electronic voting soon (within 10 years? Corona might have accelerated the timeline) Currently yes there are hacking concerns, but ut I'd expect we figure out ways to make decentralized electronic voting possible. Not to mention mail-in voting has its own issues (which Trump is currently taking advantage of by fukking with the postal service)

The current voting system is so fukked brehs, we got voter suppression, no election day holiday... No wonder half the country doesn't vote. I think the shift to electronic voting will significantly and positively impact the behavior of the electorate and thus also the behavior of candidates.
