I mean if you're talking about athletes like swimmers or weightlifters then there's no reason to expect them to be smart. But if you play a team sport involving a ball, whatever the sport is, you won't make it at the highest level if you aren't intelligent enough to get the tactical side of the sport. What he said about LeBron's ability to memorise plays he's made in the past and those of his opponents is a basic requirement if you're going to play at his level. Any elite athlete in a tactical, ball playing, team sport is going to have that skill. And it's definitely a valid form of intelligence that those people excel at.

Now if you expect an athlete to break down why Euler's formula is the most beautiful equation in mathematics or explain the truest cause of the Peloponnesian War, and then call them stupid if they can't, then you're just being stupid yourself. Nobody can excel at everything. You try to be the king at one thing and as for everything else you just try to make sure you aren't so bad that it's going to hurt you. The same guy who's an elite mathematician or historian or political scientist wouldn't be able to master what Charlamagne was talking about, the split second decision making, the tactical knowledge, the memory. You can't watch an elite athlete in any proper team sport and not realise how strong they are at that form of intelligence
