This is by far Kanye's lowest selling album ever, he's being outsold by J.Cole. And the album may not even go plat.
To put things in perspective, the shoes Kanye was rocking when he attacked the photog sold out instantly after the story came out. They were like $80 bones and now nikkas reselling them for over $200...just to let yall know how many stans that nikka has. For his album to not be gold at this point is astounding and means nobody fell for whatever bullshyt he was trying to pull
I think the ye album is not selling because he copied a formula that lost its legs to generate sales fifteen plus years ago.
you can not reapply trip-hop aesthetics to hiphop that already failed to draw after tricky and goldie.
what ye did was take his music out of the context that left him open to extreme criticism.
white people and most pr outlets know dance music or house music...
when ye, started to embrace music that was as far removed from what emulates quality hiphop.
ye, put himself in danger of losing his draw that garnered him sales.
ye, is not that great of a rapper, and does not write his own material.
now, that people know that as a widespread thing.
him going into other genre's to try his hand at that type of music.
exposes him and his weaknesses as a rapper, with little to no skill.
when, ye was making rap in a more culturally traditional sense.
he could get away with not being the best and playing the underdog role.
when, he tried to move into the house region and emulate jaydee/dillla on mbdtf.
without any actual innovation or by adding a new pocket or style rapping like dilla did rapping.
he exposed and destroyed his draw.
as originally, ye was the mainstream equivalent of emo because of his connection to rocafella.
he got away with being an alternative because he was backed by a urban/street aesthetic and label.
now, he has embraced being an alternative/triphop music maker.
all the special nods and passes he got for being an alternative content wise from the street aesthetic of the roc.
no longer works, because his draw was built off of making the emo fan feel like they were accepted, as normal.
now, he is making weirdo triphop shyt, with no connection to the street aesthetic.
on top of faking to many jax, while also never holding his end of the bargain culturally..
plus, he lacks any convincability or tonal aptitude as a rapper.
he can no longer appease that crowd, as the guy who kicks it with the thugs and is cool.
with his change in direction, he became the soft/weird nikka,..the streets do not fukk with.
you can not go from, being with the roc/beanie, to jeezy.
then, go full European house-o-matic and continue to get love, as a rapper.
it does not work like that....
fifteen years ago,..tricky and goldie found out the same thing.
